August 10, 2006: In the Open Corner Where the News Is Late

Hello, bonjour!

Today was a good one, though unexpected. First...the thwarted (thank God) plot to blow up a bunch of planes bound for the US. Not Canada, but still, look at the chaos that happened this morning in the UK...but things could be worse, much worse, and I selfishly felt like I was blessed this morning, protected even...clearly everything is going to be all right for my trip, and today's events happening today and not on the 28th are more proof...

This afternoon I went up to UC thinking I would have a nice time unboxing, sorting and boxing some books; I did, but that came later. Thank goodness I brought some lunch as when I got there I was corralled by Genevieve to work in the Book Room as Nancy, who is usually there, hadn't shown up...it was 12:30 and the place was supposed to be open by 11. So...I ate lunch and sold books and talked shop and did a puzzle and itched to get out...to Robarts to pick up the banner, only it wasn't there...so I went to the Basement of Mystery and worked by myself (Genevieve was supposed to be there but, again, no) and only left, finally, at 7:30 as no students are around, nor volunteers. My feet hurt, my lower back is in need of a rub and yes, I did buy a book and take another, why yes...I bought Elizabeth David's Italian Food for obvious reasons, and Nancy Mitford's The Pursuit of Love because I sometimes wish I was a madcap heiress.

I was going to post something here - a photoshopped "On Notice" Stephen Colbert list - which included Bobby Flay, the Toronto Blue Jays, the repair crew at Finch Station, World's Biggest Bookstore, Simon Reynolds, "Fat Free" products that aren't, all fashion magazines and people who leave on the air conditioner for WAY too long...but I don't think I could uplink it here, but go ahead, make your own!

Thanks to everyone who has signed my guestbook (you haven't? c'mon, do it!) Hugs to all, and I hope it's cooler now, wherever you are...
