| January 01, 2008: Silence, Music, Peace and Noise As I write, it is snowing heavily outside, a few pedestrians and cars go by here and there at varying speeds; the snow is steady, making the year fresh and wiping out the old, giving everyone a pause (save for the snowplows and salt trucks, but they will only appear later on)...hey ho, Happy New Year! The city is quiet. I often wish the city was a quieter place, less bright as well. (Ah, I can hear a sidewalk plough now, I think.) During the aftermath of the blackout of 2003, when all non-essential places were asked to power down, the city had a sultriness about it that had nothing to do with the heat. The silence of snow, the fact that it seems to eat sound, is like nothing else, and I hope I will experience it at least once a year in London... ...but for now I am here. I went out last night, as my mom said she could spare me for a few hours, so out I went up to a party...Sheppard Station was already deserted by 7:30 by any kind of TTC staff, the gate left open. So rides to and fro (there at least) were free, which just shows you what kindly people work there. (I swear, it must be the Cinnabon scent perpetually in the air.) Technically speaking, rides were only supposed to be free after midnight! And so I didn't have to pay when I went back home around 10:30 or so, which was very nice. The crowded train wasn't so nice, so I got out at Bloor and walked down the platform to where I knew things would be less crowded, and so they were... ...I stayed up to see what fireworks I could from the kitchen window, but rain had moved in with low clouds, making the fireworks all but invisible, a stray glowing bit of white, green or red all I could see. Otherwise it was just noise, flashes of light behind cloud as in a war, honking horns and whoops of (drunken) joy, and I tried to sleep but couldn't and neither could my mom, to the point where I finally got to sleep at 6 and she finally went to sleep around 7 or so...I think... My birthday is in a mere two weeks (happy birthday to those who have had one recently!) and I really want to have a party as I haven't had one in a while - not here, obv., but somewhere would be nice. I missed out on presents last night, due to one thing and another, snd my birthday would be a fine time to get them. Also, everyone (okay, two people) seemed interested in having me be Silver Lena one more time, and the Lenas would actually happen around the time of the Oscars, unlike last year when they were in April...the Lena gears should be in motion soon, though how soon I don't know...(RIP John Harkness, by the way; a shocking death, but he was what he was and lived life as he wanted to live it)... In case anyone out there wants to know, here are some albums I have gotten recently. Nothing, it seems, can stop me from acquiring new music. From 2007: Growing Pains, Mary J. Blige Otherwise: You might be wondering how I got all these. Good question! Four of them (Weezer, Elton & BSS) I got from someone who is selling off her cds as she wants to go to California to attend university and they were very cheap. (I had bought cds from her before, from Ozma to Puffy Ami Yumi to Joel Plaskett Emergency.) Juliana and Pink Martini I got the day after I was married at Second Vinyl, who used to be on McCaul and are now on John St. I think. Weakerthans I got while Marcello was here also, as I had to get my ringbearer a gift and they were finally in the 2-for-25 category. I got the Metric for the same deal along with the new Most Serene Republic, which I gave to him for Christmas (which is how it ended up on his year-end list). Marcello found the Eugenius for me at Sonic Boom, where I found (I knew it would be there) the DGC compilation. I got my mom something and MC & I the Jamaica compilation at Sunrise, but Marcello had sent me the Jamaica and so my caution about opening it up worked in my favor, and on Boxing Day I went back and got New Buffalo, Mary J. Blige and Taj Mahal. Back when my mom was in hospital I traded a few cds in at Penguin Music for the !!! album, then meandered over to Paradise Found and got the Lily Frost one. I have more cds to trade in at Penguin, but I won't be going back to Paradise Found in Kensington Market (though Marcello would like it as the prices there are flat, ie the GST & PST are included in the price). Oh, and Valerie Leulliot is a gift from Marcello, as is Max Roach. I had looked for them fervently in London last Eastertime to no avail, and now here they are, I think I will listen to them now... And yes yay, you can refer to me by my name if you want!
