A Much-Needed Update/St. Patrick's Day Liveblogging

Diaryrings

March 23, 2008: Radcliffe + Maconie for March 20, 2007

And finally, last Thursday's show - for those of you just coming over here, I have posted all my liveblogging of Radcliffe and Maconie on Radio 2 last week...Radcliffe was gone and so he had to wing it on his own, for the most part; in this episode, Noddy Holder came by to talk about a tv show on Rock Star Parents. If you like Slade, you will want to listen. The music's not bad either...though The Chain is really straggling, at the end...

M+N Liveblogging!!!

but first,

THE NEWS!!!!!

Air traffic controller ex- has said the London skies
are nuts

Derek Conway, employed son at job - hmmm...Old Bexley
& Sidcup? ah part-time work - wasn't he in an indie
band?

Short custodial sentences in jails messing things up

Pedophile is back from Australia - wait, he was in
jail there? Or in the UK?

Paul Scofield & Brian Wilde - I don't know Wilde at
all

RIP both of them though

Still have to see Murder In The Cathedral

WHOA 'carnal' on the news

blind supersonic pilot - pretty hip guy, flightwise

Previously,

Steve Lillywhite talked out of his ass and James Blunt
isn't has happy as he used to be - but richer, so who
cares

Is Jamie Cullum any good?

And this is...

OH I should know this!!!

BOZ SCAGGS!!!!!!!!

This was on Dale!!

And I'm sure the whole album is as good

Actual Passion and Honesty with NO GRUNTING

It sounds like Philly, sort of

Was this only a hit in the UK? I think so

Very warm and holiday-making

1976!!!!

William Royce Scaggs

Great name

Toto???????

OH HOLY CRAP

"Africa" - good luck if you play anything else Stuart

Laundry basket of good tunes

Thirsty Thursday

make mine a double of Motown with a New Pop chaser
please

This is...

UGH I can't remember but I wish they would play this
in HMV when I'm wandering around instead of STP

walks...Sambassadeur's last album with the leaf on the
cover is 15 pounds...I hope to get a new one at
Penguin Music...

Sparkadia...that's right!

A-ha - yeah, I can see that

A-ha's better though

Ingmar Bergman pop? That would be late ABBA

I don't know any Norwegian directors off-hand

1938 yacht was sinking - are they marooned? are they
okay?

Because Easter means Simply Red

Longest listener-generated...

THE CHAIN!!!!

From "Angel of Harlem" to...

please Gareth, make it work...

"Under The Bridge" - Red Hot Chili Peppers

Why not the All Saints version?

OH WELL

Slowly we crawl out of the pit of despair

the slough of despond

RHCP have been insufferable ever since this album,
pretty much

I didn't mind them before

Anthony K is mocked in the "Ladykillers" video so YAY
LUSH

There are bridges in LA but I don't think I've been to
the one they are singing about - or under it, for that
matter

Rick Rubin minimalism

So many songs about California are sad, once you've
been there you sort of know why

Of course there are happy ones too

Nice church choir

Oh but for the All Saints version....

Stuart has a blind spot? Ah well, he has a lot of
them

WE KNOW THAT

shirtless singers=Michigan

Help, My Kid's a Rock Star - Nod later

Anthony's dad...hmm...interesting...

Rogue Wave

from Oakland

This isn't really here or there

Weird power pop

THIS JUST IN!!!!

The tickertape is a chunkin' along

Bald, badly-shaven jangle-folker Stipe says pop stars
& public figures are open about their sexuality - OUT
100 from '95 - "I was totally open...with the people I
was sleeping with"...

Hard to think of anything about them besides Lamaq
likes them - in trouble - Pigeon Detectives said
Guinness was free?

AAAAAAAAAAAA

I should know this!!!

Camel walk in my sleep?

"Whatta Man"

I am confused

Is this a cover or a song before Salt 'n' Pepa?

Well, does he have a face like Denzel?

This must be the original...

He can do the funky broadway...well now...he can back
up and do the tighten up...

Linda who?

I have never heard that!!

Nod in tha house!

Horrible storms on the M62

windy windy

Wuthering M62

THIS JUST IN!!!!

Legal decent honcho Chris Martin - Viva La Vida - I
mentioned it first! - well it was recorded in Spain -
it's not the worst title I've ever heard pal -
Oracular Spectacular is much worse

Whey-faced larcenist Doherty & potteries poodle Slash
could face jail over old laws that have never been
repealed - ladies who bare themselves in Liverpool
must work in tropical fishshop

Lancashire - no dog barking on seashore

1797 - top hats are illegal??

Nod's illegal for years then

no carpet-beating, doormat-shaking okay before 8am

act of treason to lick & stamp the queen upside down

I'll remember to avoid that

And now, a glass of water as the song of the week
creeps along into oblivion

Brian Wilde deserves a better song than that

Notable top hat wearers - the Penguin, Willy Wonka,
Mr. Peanut, Fred Astaire

Nod saw a Saturday night show - Lulu in a sparkly
dress - thought it would be good to use it - how can I
control what the mirrors do - on a hat! Concave, so
he had to find one where he could put mirrors on it -
Kensington High Street-Freddy had a stall there - by
accident he found a coachman's hat - just the right
size - did it himself

very heavy with all that glass

a pin spot on the hat

lit up the whole audience - son et lumiere top hat
show

AAAAAHHHH

ROBERT PALMER!

This is a cover, right?

"I Didn't Mean To Turn You On"

Stuart's into the soul men tonight, clearly

If only Power Station had been like this, they would
have been sufferable

Interesting to hear a man sing this

Occupational hazzard?

Rip Tide

SAW!!!

Simple, but not easy

Easter Monday night!

THE CHAIN!!!!!!!

From "Under The Bridge" to...

Yarm - Lucy - she makes sandwiches for a living

unusual sandwich - smoked cheddar & wholegrain mustard

prepacked sandwiches

used to go to offices - now sells them in garages

pubs in town square - half in each one - Yarm is
lovely, village - close to Middlesborough

"Bridge Over Troubled Water"

Lovely record - well, that's one way of putting it

Nearly out of the slough here

This is white gospel - I know it's a Righteous
Brothers tribute, but the piano makes it more gospel
to me

UGH the line about the night coming down so hard goes
forward to...come on...THE NEW PORNOGRAPHERS! "The
evening comes down so hard" from Twin Cinema - "These
Are The Fables" which we heard in the Notting Hill MVE

Garfunkel does an amazing job here even for him

Too loud at the end though

Just put his dog to sleep - not a brilliant choice -
again, that is one way of putting it

Please don't turn into Wogan Stuart, PLEASE

They didn't speak because of that song

He got to sing it - how? Because he sings it better

Suck it up, Simon

I am not the biggest Paul Simon fan, though
"Kodachrome" is ace

Gabriela IS NOT LOVELY

SHEEEESH

I think she is the worst of them all, though it's hard
to tell

Just go to the west end, please

Jimi!!

JIMI!!!!!!!!!!

"Angel"

Why even PLAY Gabriela when you can play Jimi?

I don't know this, but it is lovely and he's really
singing sweetly

cosmic warmth

:-))))))))

Oh we will fly together, mon homme...

Rod Stewart covered that? Never heard it, thankfully

THE NEWS!!

Heathrow safety is lax

Oh, but Richard Rogers' new Heathrow hub is cool!

Not that I want to visit it, esp.

The Bank of England is rethinking how to deal with
banks

Community penalties for minor offences - but is it
that simple? I wonder if those talking surveillance
cameras are everywhere yet

Testing errors in biopsies

Jesus' washing of feet - shining of shoes? NOT THE
SAME THING

The point is you touch the person directly

SIGGGGGGH

What's not to like?

I should know this!

Isn't this the 5 6 7 8s?

I can never remember the numbers but it's an all-girl
Japanese group & they were in one of the Kill Bill
movies

nevertheless, they are cool

Just one step away from being bad, so they are good

The Trashmen and Kingsmen live on in Japan

YAY YAY

WHOO HOO SONG

Toby in Bournemouth - 50 quid bet? His Royal
Holderness - bought from Mercury's stall - going to a
children's charity - AWW - before he was in Queen -
just about starting to form

You wait one day I'm going to be bigger than you

And then he took over THE WORLD

No motivational pep talks needed for him

They toured as if they were a success and thus were
never very wealthy

Only Bo Rhap ended that

OH GOD QUIT PRAISING SUPERGRASS

Sigh

Not any better on record

YYYYYYYAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWNNNNNN

I do believe they have lost it

Is there any decent lad's music anymore?

I think not

Help, My Kid's A Rock Star

part of One Life series

Sugg's mom, Courtney's dad (SIGH) Mitch Winehouse, etc

So Solid Crew!

WHY do people talk to Hank Harrison

No love lost there, pun unintended

Suggs' mom - dad left them when Suggs was young -
looked after a pub in Soho - back in the days when
people got drunk ALL THE TIME - she didn't even know
he was in a band???

TOTP - 16 years old?

Mitch - he left her mum when she was 10 - did it have
an effect? - lyrics to songs - she started drinking
when she began to perform

Anthony K's upbringing - he knew i was doing drugs -
everyone did man - lots of parties - lots o' famous
people - ah the 70s - he let him experience drugs at
WHAT age? Hmmm - not a big deal

His dad was an actor - creepy, then you like him more

Split up with mum - I think there's a pattern here

Determined to show him the LA lifestyle - sex when he
was 12, 13?

When A became a heroin addict - then he realized the
damage

Went to rehab with him - good dad

AWW he cries

They are best mates, which is nice

Hank is exasperated with Courtney

He doesn't like her - loves her, sure

Nod's mom was telling him to get a proper job until he
was 50 years old

TOTP meant nothing to her

"This Is Your Life" - Michael Aspel - that was it, he
was legitimate

The Wigan Observer? No the Sunday Observer

Mucking about on the telly - never saw them in
concert?

Oh, they were not prepared...

"Rehab"

Not the single of the year, Idolator, Village Voice,
etc.

But then you went to rehab

SIGGGGGGGGGGGGH

Just do the James Bond theme and go away, PLEASE

Listen to Karen Dalton, Billie Davis, etc.

OH for Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings

Sharon was here first and she'll be here last

Brilliant? How many times can a liveblogger sigh

From the Forum:

Sympathy - what has she done? She's gone to rehab, at
least

Married the wrong guy, but then she would

As my mom would say, they deserve each other

Behave badly because other artists have also done so

It's not true though

High Five, Nod

The show came first - the show must go on - then party
- yin and yang, I suppose

Industrial part of Midlands - working-class ethic -
not like people from Camden? Slade had something
extra...willpower - Nod's read the 7 Habits book for
sure

Ah transit vans - no such things as motorways?
Carriageways I guess - Slade rode on horses across the
land FOR YOU BRITAIN

The Kooks - perfect time to go open the window

Nowadays the kids go to the Brit School, take their
yelpy-yelp courses, get a record out and get played on
this show and think they've got it made

Xerox rock

Well I thought it was pronounced that way

That's how it's spelt

Tom Waits in Chicago - broken mirror on bowler hat

Glam rock phenomenon - spilt beer on future wife

Phil Lynott had a mirrored bass? Suzi Quatro had
opened - ah good ol' Suzi - on the bill as a favor to
Mickie Most - ah Phil

Scratchplate mirror

Goldfrapp!!!!!

This is the new single!!!

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH

I love your description - it's so 1967, as is this

The new album and the last two are all on 2/25 at HMV

I bet this is one of the albums of the year and
Madonna's isn't 1/8 as good as this

The student leapfrogs over the teacher

Theremin! Or something like it

:-))))))))

Real happiness as opposed to weekend retreat happiness

Similar to "Somewhere In My Heart" - no, not really

Polar Speed Steve on the M1

Happy Easter Auntie Janet!

BB6 Music - I don't want to feel your love, Mr. Lamb

Relationships cannot be improved by your show

THE CHAIN!!!!!!

From "Bridge Over Troubled Water" to...

Mary en route to Leicester - on way back home

Leicester Forest - a service station - not an actual
forest

arctic conditions

Stuart always needs his crampons

HELLO

May Ball?

"Smoke On The Water"

OH Dearie Me

*headdesk*

back down to the slough of despond YET AGAIN

I have *never* understood the appeal of this

Always way up there on my list of reasons for punk

Ugly voice, boring riff, and not the most thrilling
story either

There is nothing good about this, at all

END ALREADY

I HATE THIS SONG

AAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH

My mom says it's known as the song to play to show the
party is over

FINALLY DONE

PLEASE GOD NEVER AGAIN

Soundcheck - Blur played "My Sharona" - oh I'd like to
hear that

Blunt played Slade - oh I'm a poet

Please Britain, pick a better song than that

Marx - "Noah and the Whale"

Hey, it's a British Jack Johnson, just what we need!

Doubt if he surfs though

Isn't there surfing in Wales?

Better than Danny & The Champions of the World - they
were painful

Hm, have to decide fast

Grosvenor...not bad...Hot Chip pals
Oh The Last Shadowpuppets that's good
Neon Neon are ALL WRONG - HIS VOICE IS TOTALLY OFF
SIGH
I remember 1981
Marx - not bad at all, considering

Nod is going to parties and eating eggs

Back in a month...

Bob Dylan - Lay Lady Lay

From NASHVILLE SKYLINE, which my mom owned

The only time I've seen him smile, ever

SO much better than him singing "Congratuations" with
the Travelling Wilburys which I heard in HMV AGAINST
MY WILL

ARGH

This is good though

I like his voice and the band is really good too

Ah percussion!

His voice is so upfront, compared to everything else

And so it ends...
